Turn your salon green!

• Many beauty products for nails contain materials that are hazardous to the environment when disposed inappropriately. For example, expired bottles of nail enamel or sculpting liquids should be disposed through RCRA (Resource Conservation and Recovery Act) approved waste facilities. Check manufacturer Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) if you are not sure if the product is harmful. Contact your local government or county waste disposal to find out about special collection days or permanent collection centers in your area. Or check the EPA’s U.S. listing of approved waste facilities.
• Set up containers in the salon to recycle your paper, cardboard, cans, plastic and glass. Take the time to recycle ink cartridges - most office supply stores support those programs.
• Use cleaning products and laundry detergents that are better for the environment and your health. Avoid products with chlorine or ammonia.
• Conserve electricity by turning off unused appliances and lights. Switch to higher efficiency, longer lasting light bulbs – they cost more but the savings are immediate.
• Switch to reusable water bottles to keep you hydrated during the day.
• Properly dispose of other common hazardous material, such as paints, batteries and high efficiency light bulbs containing mercury.
• Install programmable thermostats to save energy on heat or air-conditioning. Install ceiling fans to help you use less energy. And maybe it’s time to upgrade your old air-conditioning unit or hot water heater. Many newer models are much more energy efficient.
